Stubborn Finder in OS X
Sometimes in Leopard I find that The Finder is not playing very nice. This happened to me recently when I was trying to mount a drive at log on. When I was off that particular network finder couldn't handle it and caused issues like my icons in the menubar not to show. When I went to log off it wouldn't work and same with a reboot, it hangs up the process.
One way to get around a situation where you can't log out or reboot is to open Terminal and type sudo reboot and then enter your password. This causes the machine to immediately restart. Going about ordering a reboot through the Unix roots of Terminal will usually get the job done.
